Welcome to Edenton
Welcome to Edenton — the South's Prettiest Small Town. Nestled on the shores of Edenton Bay on the Albemarle Sound, Edenton is North Carolina's second-oldest town and the state's first colonial capital. We hope you'll love it here as much as we do. This guide will help you get set up: utilities, trash pickup, schools, voter registration, and where to find community. If you have questions, Town Hall is always a good first call: (252) 482-2155.
Setting Up Utilities
Water, sewer, electric, and trash are all handled through the Town of Edenton. Stop by Town Hall at 400 S. Broad Street (Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) to set up new service, or call (252) 482-2155. Bring: • Photo ID • Rental agreement or proof of ownership • Deposit (varies by service) Bills are typically due on the 20th of each month. You can pay in person, by mail, or online at townofedenton.com.
Trash & Recycling Schedule
Set trash out by 6:00 AM on your pickup day. 🗓️ Trash Pickup: • East Side — Monday • Business Dumpsters — Tuesday • Yard Waste (town-wide) — Thursday • West Side — Friday ♻️ Recycling — every other Wednesday, town-wide. Holiday weeks may shift the schedule — check the Town of Edenton website for holiday updates.
Driver's License & Vehicle Registration
Driver's licenses and vehicle registration are handled by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles (NC DMV), not the town. Visit ncdot.gov/dmv to find the closest license plate agency and driver license office. You'll typically need to: • Update your address within 60 days of moving • Register your vehicle in NC • Transfer your out-of-state license within 60 days
Register to Vote
New residents can register to vote through the Chowan County Board of Elections. You'll need proof of residence (utility bill, lease, or driver's license with your Edenton address). You can also register online at the NC State Board of Elections website, at the DMV when you get your NC license, or at the Chowan County Board of Elections office.
Enrolling Kids in School
The Edenton-Chowan School District (ECPS) serves all K–12 students in town and the county. Visit ecps.k12.nc.us for enrollment forms and information. You'll need: • Proof of residence • Child's birth certificate • Immunization records • Previous school records (for transfers) Schools include D.F. Walker Elementary, White Oak Elementary, Chowan Middle School, and John A. Holmes High School.
Library Card & Programs
The Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library at 106 W. Water Street is a wonderful community resource — free WiFi, kids' programs, book clubs, and public computers. Stop by to sign up for a free library card. Bring a photo ID and proof of your Edenton or Chowan County address.
