The Edenton Police Department has been getting a lot of calls about campaign signs popping up a little too early around town and being in the right-of-way. We want to remind everyone of NC General Statute 136-32, which says campaign signs can’t be placed in the public right-of-way until September 15, 2026, which is 30 days before the general election. In Edenton, the public right-of-way includes the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street. If a sign is in that area before September 15, it’s considered illegally placed. As we celebrate the 250th birthday of our nation, we’re proud of the freedoms our forefathers fought and sacrificed for. Supporting the candidate of your choice is absolutely part of that. We just ask that everyone do it legally and respectfully. Starting soon, we’ll have to remove signs that are placed too early or are in the right-of-way within town limits. We’ll do our best to return them to the appropriate campaign. Thanks for helping us keep Edenton safe, fair, and looking good during election season.
